Treatment of a child with common heart disease, such as ventricular septal defect, costs about NT$250,000 (US$10,000). Some children may acquire rheumatic heart disease, which requires very expensive medical and surgical treatments. For the children born in families which cannot afford the necessary medical care, in June 1971, a group of pediatricians, nurses, social workers and citizens concerned organized the CARDIAC CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION (CCF) OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA. Goals The goals of the CCF are to extend aids to those needy children who have cardiac disabilities; to encourage the work toward prevention of, and the research on childhood heart disease; to facilitate better general understanding of the problems and needs of cardiac children and their families, thus fostering the welfare of infants and children with heart disease. Major Tasks (1) To provide financial support for cardiac children receiving medical and surgical treatments. (2) To assist cardiac children receiving hospital care, and provide counseling services. (3) To publish pamphlets and books on prevention and home-care of cardiac diseases. (4) To meet with doctors, nurses and friends of Cardiac Children and discuss the ways to improve Foundation services. (5) To monitor cardiac children and ensure that they receive appropriate ongoing treatment and care. (6) To subsidize research, teaching and training programs related to childhood cardiovascular disease. (7) To hold fund-raising activities and publicize the objectives and needs of the CCF. (8) To edit seasonal bulletins reporting activities, cardiac news and honoring the sponsors. (9) To operate schoolsite cardiac screening program by portable EKG and PCG The Cardiac Children's Registry Taiwan Quite a few cardiac children do not realize their own health situation. The Secretary - General of the CCF, Dr. Lue, has started, since 1985, a heart disease screening program among school children, in corporation with the Department of Health, Executive Yuan, and the Department of Education, Taiwan Provincial Government. The program has involved questionnaire surveys on more than five hundred primary, secondary and high schools in Taiwan. Those students with a history and/or symptoms of heart disease were subjected to ECG and PCG examinations at school health center by technicians. The cardiac suspects thus found were referred to the hospital for futher workups. Nearly 1% of students surveyed in the past had a heart problem. In 1994, the Cardiac Children's Registry Taiwan was established to register, monitor and follow up those children with cardiac problems. A computer data base was set up, including the data of echocardiograms and cardiac catheterizations. Pediatric cardiologists from 13 hospitals in Taiwan join and collaborate in this program. This attention will be focused to the prevention of cardiac diseases by the general public and health professionals. Health Care Support for Cardiac Children Cardiac children from birth to 18 years of age who are receiving medical or surgical treatments in hospitals holding a contract with the Foundation may apply for financial support through hospital social workers.
